How is Artificial Intelligence changing the way we design? Archiproducts discusses this with architect Cino Zucchi – founder of the CZA Cino Zucchi Architetti studio, Carlos Bañón – associate professor at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) and founder of Subarchitecture Design, Tim Fu – architect at Zaha Hadid Architects, specializing in Algorithm Design and A.I, and Davide Angeli – Deputy Managing Director of AMDL CIRCLE.
Cino Zucchi Biography
A Milanese architect born in 1955, Cino Zucchi received a Bachelor of Science in Art and Design from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1978, and a Bachelor of Architecture degree in 1979 from the Politecnico di Milano, where he currently is professor of Architectural and Urban Design.
In 2013, he was John T. Dunlop Visiting Professor in Housing and Urbanization at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design and has participated as a lecturer in numerous seminars on urban design and theory at Syracuse University in Florence, ETH Zurich and Universidad Politécnica de Madrid.
He is regularly invited to give lectures and participate in juries of architecture and design competitions both in Italy and abroad. He was the chairman of the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Fundaciò Mies van der Rohe Award in 2015, and is a member of the international ARE_Living team on the topic of innovation in living.
Considered a master of contemporary architecture, he is the author of numerous essays, articles and books on urban design, architectural history and theory.
Founder of the architecture firm CZA-Cino Zucchi Architetti, he designs and constructs residential buildings, shopping centers, industrial buildings, offices, museums, and public spaces. He organizes master-plans, and plans the urban rehabilitation of industrial and historic areas both in Italy and abroad.
Among the best-known projects are the Giudecca Houses, Salewa Headquarters, the Abbiategrasso Fair, residential buildings at Portello in Milan, the Automobile Museum in Turin, the Sesto San Giovanni Church, and Lavazza headquarters in Turin.
Carlos Bañón Biography
Carlos Bañón is an architect specializing in Digital Design and Advanced Manufacturing methods within the built environment. He is the Director of Airlab, Co-Founder of Subarquitectura Architects, and a tenured Associate Professor of Architecture and Sustainable Design at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). Bañón has also held visiting professorships at prestigious institutions such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and EPFL Lausanne.
His research projects cover a wide range of topics, including Architectural Tectonics with Additive Manufacturing, Design Workflows for the Circular Economy, and Artificial Intelligence applied to Spatial Design. Bañón’s ground-breaking work in AI-driven architectural design has been published worldwide, creating workflows to innovate in architectural design of spaces with controlled materials and atmospheres.
Bañón’s work has gained international recognition, with selections for two editions of the Venice Biennale of Architecture and numerous prestigious awards, such as the Design of the Year Prize by the London Design Museum, Gold and Silver Medals by the International Paralympic and Olympic Committees, and the Singapore President Design Award.
His recent work focuses on studying the possibilities of AI to create novel design methods for architects, showcasing the potential of innovative technologies in shaping the future of the architectural discipline.
Tim Fu Biography
Tim Fu is an architectural designer of Zaha Hadid Architects (London, UK). He specializes in algorithmic design and A.I. research at the computational research group ZHACODE.
He has collaborated with international firms on A.I.-aided architectural design and has worked with brand names on A.I. product and fashion design.
In addition, he has hosted computational design workshops in various institutions including Harvard GSD, ACADIA, PA Academy and others. His AI explorations has been featured worldwide, including Bloomberg, AD, the Venice Biennale, and the Generative AI Summit.
Davide Angeli Biography
Davide Angeli was born in Imola, Italy, in 1982. Graduated from IED in Milan, Davide began his career in 2004 alongside Michele De Lucchi, collaborating at his research and sculpture works. He then joined Michele De Lucchi’s AMDL CIRCLE where today he is Deputy Studio Director, Head of International Business.
He designed Interiors and installations for Poltrona Frau, Moschino, Kempinski, Artemide, Ferrari, Fiat, Azimut Yachts, Lavazza, etc. Products for Molteni, Guzzini, Produzione Privata, Unifor, Riva, Maruni, Enel, etc. Museum exhibitions for Triennale Milano, Scuderie del Quirinale, Reggia di Venaria, Cini Foundation, and Caixaforum. Graphics and brand image for Intesa Sanpaolo, Banca Popolare Italiana, Zambon, etc.
Winner of the “Top Young Italian Industrial Designer Award” promoted by the Italian Cultural Institute of New York, he has taught furniture design at the Istituto Europeo di Design in Milan since 2008. In 2019 he Co-founded Irving Place, a Millennial’s inspired interior design manufacturer firm.
